Everything you need to know about Spotify audio quality settings, streaming bitrates, and how to get the best sound.
Understanding Spotify's audio quality settings helps you get the best listening experience. Here's everything you need to know about bitrates, formats, and how to optimize your settings.
Spotify's Audio Quality Tiers
Spotify offers different quality levels depending on your subscription:
| Quality | Bitrate | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Low | 24 kbps | Free & Premium |
| Normal | 96 kbps | Free & Premium |
| High | 160 kbps | Free & Premium |
| Very High | 320 kbps | Premium only |
What About Spotify HiFi?
Spotify has announced HiFi (lossless) quality, but as of 2025, it's still not widely available. When it launches, it will offer CD-quality (16-bit/44.1kHz) streaming.
In the meantime, if you want lossless audio from Spotify tracks, downloading in FLAC format with SpotiLab is your best option.
Spotify's Audio Format
Spotify uses Ogg Vorbis format for streaming, not MP3. Ogg Vorbis is generally considered to offer better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate.
However, when you download music, you typically want MP3 for maximum compatibility or FLAC for maximum quality.
How to Maximize Spotify Quality
- Go to Settings in the Spotify app
- Find "Audio Quality" or "Music Quality"
- Set "Streaming quality" to "Very High" (Premium required)
- Enable "Download quality" to "Very High" for offline tracks
- Disable "Normalize volume" for more dynamic range (optional)
When to Download Instead of Stream
Even with Spotify's highest quality, there are reasons to download:
- You want true lossless FLAC quality (not available on Spotify yet)
- You want to use the music in other apps or devices
- You want to keep music even if it's removed from Spotify
- You want to avoid using mobile data
